Becoming a Volunteer Operator  for the Stop Hate Line

What is the Stop Hate Line?

The Stop Hate Line provides 24-hour support for anyone affected by any hate crime.  A hate crime is any offence against a person or property that is perceived by the victim or any other person as being motivated by hatred of race, religion, sexual orientation or disability.  By phoning 0800 138 1625 victims or witnesses can talk to operators at any time of day or night and receive information and help.  The Stop Hate Line currently operates in English.  Speakers of other languages can leave their details and be called back by an interpreter.

What do volunteer operators do?

  • Operators must be able to speak English clearly, and be confident in dealing with callers in a sensitive and professional manner.

  • Operators are expected to listen to the caller, record all details of the call, and offer information about actions that the caller can take and agencies that can offer help.

  • After taking a call, operators submit all call details to the Stop Hate Coordinator at Stop Hate UK, so that further support can be provided for the caller.

What do we offer our volunteer operators?

  • Ongoing training and support will be offered to Stop Hate Line operators by Stop Hate UK.

  • Expenses incurred whilst volunteering as a Stop Hate Line operator will be reimbursed by Stop Hate UK, in accordance with their expenses policy.

How much time would I need to give?

  • Operators are required to work on a flexi-rota basis to ensure that the line is covered 24 hours per day, seven days a week.

  • Operators can work for as many hours per week or month as they choose – but total commitment is vital in order to ensure that the line can operate successfully.

Where would I work from?

Operators can log in from any landline, whether at home or at work.
