Met Police Launch Youth Website

A youth website has been launched by police for the first time. The site http://www.safe.met.police.uk/ focusses on keeping safe and provides information, advice and contacts for young people. Chief Superintendant Adrian Hancock highlights the reasons for the site:

“Young people can be as many as three times more likely to be the victim of a street robbery than any other age group so Safe is just one way we can give them advice on how to keep safe.”

16-year old Wandsworth pupil Ollie Hughes recently tried the website and said: “Young people are a lot more internet savvy than their parents and we’re usually a lot more comfortable online and know how to research and find information so I think Safe would be used by young people to find things out. I think Safe is really easy to use as you get to just read the things you’re interested in or what you want to find out about.”

Liverpool teenagers give Hate Crime advice to Government

Liverpool teenagers have today presented their Hate crime pack to Government ministers. The pack, produced as part of a project by community organisation ‘Homotopia’ contains anti-bullying and Hate Crime material. This initiative also has the backing of the National Union of Teachers and the Merseyside Police and may be rolled out nationally.

Stop and Search Laws changed

Police powers to stop and serach are to be reduced, according to the Home Secretary.

“Police officers will no longer be able to stop and search you under
section 44 of the Terrorism Act. They will now need to have a
‘reasonable suspicion’ that you are a terrorist before you can be
searched under the Terrorism Act.

rather than using section 44 powers, police officers will have to rely
on section 43 powers. These require officers to reasonably suspect the
person to be a terrorist.

Police will be able to search vehicles under section 44 of the law, but
even then only if they have reasonable suspicion of terrorist activity.

The move follows a decision by the European Court of Human Rights
(ECHR).

The ECHR ruled that the use of stop and search powers under section 44
of the Terrorism Act 2000 violated the right to a private life.

The court said that stop and search powers under section 44 were too
broad and did not have enough safeguards to protect civil liberties.”

Lancashire MP uses maiden speech to highlight disability hate crime

Paul Maynard, MP has highlighted the issue of disability hate crime in his first speech as an MP. The Blackpool North and Thornton Cleveleys Conservative MP is also the first MP with cerebral palsy. He also suffers from epilepsy.

“It’s not just legislative equality, it’s changing the way people think so they don’t see disability anymore, “That’s why making sure we progress on disability hate crime is so important because that is about changing the way people think.”

Researchers at the University of Leeds are carrying out a study about homophobic and transphobic hate crime. Their aim is to discover how best to encourage the reporting of these types of hate crimen and are asking for participants to answer a quick survey. Language-Free Hate Crime Information launched in Northumbria

Northumbria Police have launched a package of short videos and posters which are entirely language-free. The information is aimed at migrant communities and groups for whom English is not a first language. They focus on eight key areas – anti-social behaviour, knife crime, hate crime, suspicious behaviour leading onto more series crime such as terrorism, violent crime, internet safety, alcohol leading to vulnerability and driving in the UK.
