Helplines Association “disappointed” about bullying helpline’s breach of confidentiality

The Helplines Association has issued a press release in response to an apparent breach of confidentiality by a helpline over the Gordon Brown bullying accusations. The chief executive of the National Bullying Helpline told the press that someone from Gordon Brown’s office had contacted them several times in the past year. THA says that it is concerned that this breach of confidentiality will reflect negatively on the helplines sector and that “the fundamental principle of any helpline is that they help to build the trust and confidence of their user to reach out for help.”

Panorama programme boosts public awareness of disability hate crime

Primetime TV coverage was given to disability hate crime last week by the BBCs Panorama programme. Undercover film and CCTV footage of disability hate crime and abuse was broadcast in a programme on disability hate crime in Bridgend, Wales. Wheelchair user Simon Green secretly filmed the shocking abuse he experienced and reveals that many incidents are not properly reported or prosecuted. Viewers commenting on the Panorama website were horrified by what they saw.

Islamophobia report is published by new research centre

The new centre for research into Islamophobia and Anti-Muslim hate crime has published its first report. The report is reviewed positively by the Institute of Race Relations, with a few reservations.

Teenager found guilty of internet race hate campaign

An un-named 17 year old has been found guilty of posting videos showing attacks on black people onto the video sharing site YouTube. He also ran a white supremacist website. This is the first case of its kind in England and Wales.

Holocaust Memorial Day 2010

27th January 2010 is Holocaust Memorial Day, the international day of remembrance for victims of the Holocaust and other genocides such as those in Rwanda, Bosnia and Croatia. This year’s theme is the Legacy of Hope, aiming for a safer, inclusive society where the differences between people are respected.

People in Liverpool to remember victims of Homophobia

On Saturday 30th January 2010 at 11am there will be a Pink and Black triangle wreath laying ceremony at The Peace Memorial, St Johns Gardens, Liverpool.

Representatives of Homotopia, Merseyside Police, Armistead, GYRO, Mersey Fire and Rescue Service,and Our Story Liverpool, as well as the Lord Mayor, will attend to remember victims of Homophobia. The event is part of the continuing focus of Homotopia’s Project Triangle, and marks the start of LGBT history month in February.
